Prehistory

Prehistory is divided into early prehistory, middle prehistory, and late prehistory. Prehistory deals with human history before most written, recorded history. In the 19th century, studies of artifacts unearthed in Europe and Asia suggested a classification. The objects could be organized from oldest to newest belonging to a Stone age, a Bronze age, and and an Iron age. At about the same time, fossilized human or human-like skeletons prompted investigation of human origins. Since then, there have been numerous discoveries made in different places that have given an increasingly detailed picture of human prehistory.

Early Prehistory

Early prehistory includes fossil and hominid history until about 50,000 yrs ago. It includes Pliocene prehistory, early Pleistocene prehistory, early mid Pleistocene prehistory, mid Pleistocene prehistory, and late mid Pleistocene prehistory.

Middle Prehistory

Middle prehistory include anatomically and culturally modern man, from 50,000 years ago to about 10,000 years ago. This is an arbitrary date, but corresponds roughly to the ending of the last Ice Age. Dates in this period are designated as BP (Before Present) It includes the 5th decamillennium BP, 4th decamillennium BP, 3rd decamillennium BP, and 2nd decamillennium BP.

Late Prehistory

Late prehistory includes the development of neolithic or late stone age cultures. Dates in this period are given as BC, (Before Common) so that 10,000 BP corresponds to 8000 BC. This is given an arbitrary ending date of 3000 BC, which corresponds roughly to the beginning of written records. It includes the 8th millennium BC, 7th millennium BC, 6th millennium BC, 5th millennium BC, and 4th millennium BC.

Other History

Other periods of history can be used to examine early prehistory, middle prehistory, and late prehistory. Antiquity and classical and medieval history has limited application. Prehistory has been most extensively studied during modern history including the 16th century, 17th century, 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century with the development of archaeology and scientific methods. The future can also be connected.
