Early Prehistory

Early prehistory is here divided into the Pliocene, early Pleistocene, early mid Pleistocene, mid Pleistocene, and late mid Pleistocene.

   

Pliocene Prehistory

5.322 million years to 2.588 million years BP. Stone tools and remains classified as Paranthropus and Australopithecus can be identified from this period.

Early Pleistocene Prehistory

Gelasian period (2.588 - 1.806 million years BP). Homo Habilis and related species appeared about the beginning of this period. Homo Erectus appeared toward the end of this period.

Early mid Pleistocene Prehistory

Calabrian period (1.806-0.781 million years BP). Homo Erectus predominated in this period. The Beestonian or Nebraskan glaciation ocurred about 1.1 million years BP.

Mid Pleistocene Prehistory

Ionian period (781-126 thousand years BP). The Kansan glaciation occurred about 580,000 years ago. Hominids began to control fire about 400,000 years BP. The Wolstonian glaciation occurred about 200,000 years BP. Archaic homo Sapiens appeared about 200,000 years BP along with signs of distinctively human culture including the burial of the dead, music, art, and multi-part tools. Neanderthal man is thought to have originated during this period.

Late Mid Pleistocene Prehistory

Late mid Pleistocene prehistory as used here includes most of the Tarantian period. (126-11.7 thousand years BP), up to 50,000 years BP. The Wisconsin glaciation began about 80,00 years BP. The Toba volcanic eruption about 73,000 years BP is thought to have influenced human prehistory. It is thought that modern humans began to disperse from Africa.

Other history

Other history including other prehistory, antiquity, classical and medieval history, modern history, and the future can be used to examine Pliocene prehistory, early Pleistocene prehistory, early mid Pleistocene prehistory, mid Pleistocene prehistory, and late mid Pleistocene prehistory. Most of what is known of this period has been discovered in the 19th century and 20th century.

Sociology

It is thought that humans originated in Africa, and spread across Asia and Europe. The Americas are thought to have been uninhabited.

There is little evidence of institutional activity during early prehistory, but modern institutions do affect the study of early prehistory.
