Modern History

16th century

Chakri deposed the last king of the former dynasty, defeated the Burmese, and established a new dynasty. He took the name of Rama I.

19th century

He fought wars against Vietnam and Cambodia. The mid 19th century including the early 1840s, late 1850s, early 1860s, and late 1860s can be connected. Rama III ruled. Mongkut came to the throne as Rama IV in 1851. The late mid 19th century including the early 1860s, late 1860s, early 1870s, and late 1870s can be connected. Mongkut ruled as Rama IV and was succeeded by his son Chulalongkorn. The late 19th century including the early 1880s, late 1880s, early 1890s, and late 1890s can be connected. Chulalongkorn continued to rule as Rama V and continued attempts at modernization, but lost territory.

20th century

The absolute monarchy was ended and the name of the country was changed from Siam to Thailand. Thailand was nominally an ally of Japan in World War II, but there was a resistance movement and the nation allied with the US afterwards. Late 20th century

Chavalit Yongchaiyudh was elected Prime minister in 1997. A new Constitution was formed in 1997, and the Asian Financial crisis that same year caused Chavlit's resignation and Chuan Leekpai was renamed as Prime Minister.

Early 21st century

The early 2000s including 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 can be connected. A popular party led by Thaksin Shinaratra came to power. The late 2000s including 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 can be connected. A military coup in 2006 was followed by a restoration of a civilian government under Samak Sundaravej in 2007. Various protests arose. Somchai Wongsawat and then Abhisit Vejjajiva emerged as Prime ministers in 2010.
