Early Medieval History

This is subdivided by century and includes events and developments of the 6th century CE, 7th century CE, 8th century CE, 9th century CE, and 10th century CE.


In Germany, The Frankish kingdoms became the Holy Roman empire. In the Netherlands, Germanic and Frankish peoples converted to Christianity. The Netherlands were was invaded by Germanic tribes, ruled by Merovingian and Carolingian kings, and eventually dominated by France and the Holy roman Empire. Russia's written history begins about 862 CE. Poland's written history begins about 966 CE. Ostrogoths, Lombards, Slavs, and Magyar peoples from what is now Russia entered the region and established the Hungarian kingdom in about 895 CE.

Most of Turkey was ruled by the Byzantine Empire. Egypt was conquered by Islamic peoples. Persia was conquered by Islamic invaders, and the Ummayad Caliphate and later the Abbasid caliphate were important. Islam arose in Arabia. Yemen came under Islamic rule. Algeria was conquered by the Muslims. Morocco was overrun by Vandals, then Visigoths, then claimed by the Byzantine empire, and then conquered by Muslims.

Islam entered northern India. Islam was preached in Pakistan and won many converts. In Bangladesh, Islam was introduced by Arab traders and Sufi missionaries. Various dynasties ruled Nepal.

This period includes the periods of the Three Kingdoms, Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties in China. Buddhism entered Japan during the Asuka period, which was followed by the Naran period and the Heian period. These are known as classical Japan. North South States period and the later Three Kingdoms period of Korea can be considered.

Vietnam was under Chinese rule, but gained independence in the 10th century. Information about this period in Thailand is poorly documented and is best known through archaeology. The Pagan kingdom of Burma collapsed and was succeeded by a number of smaller kingdoms. The Srivijaya naval kingdom, Silendra, and Mataram dynasties can be identified in Indonesia. Little is known of the Philippines in this period. Little is known of Malaysia during his period.

6th century CE

7th century CE

This includes events of the early 600s, early mid 600s, mid 600s, late mid 600s, and late 600s.

8th century CE

This includes events of the early 700s, early mid 700s, mid 700s, late mid 700s, and late 700s.

9th century CE

This includes events of the early 800s, early mid 800s, mid 800s, late mid 800s, and late 800s.

10th century CE

This includes events of the early 900s, early mid 900s, mid 900s, late mid 900s, and late 900s.
