Late 20th century

Mobutu Sese Seko was forced out of office in 1997 by forces led by Laurent-Desire Kabila, beginning the second Congolese War, and the country's name was changed back from Zaire to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Early 21st century

The early 2000s including 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 can be connected. Kabila was assasinated in 2001. He was succeeded by his son Joseph Kabila who in 2003 brought the war to an end. The late 2000s including 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 can be connected. Joseph Kabila was elected President. Several rebellions and conflicts began.

Early 2010s
